My duties include, but are not limited to, participating in field projects (i.e., survey and excavation), conducting mound surveys, assisting with the preparation of compliance reports, and a variety of other laboratory tasks. I participate in Phase I archaeological surveys of highways, bridges, and airports, including conducting pedestrian survey, hand auguring, soil profile work, site evaluation, and the use of a Trimble GPS for mapping. I also analyze artifacts, generate data tables, and produce maps from field GPS data and hand drawn sketch maps for use in Archaeological Survey Short Reports (ASSR) and Archaeological Testing Short Reports (ATSR) for Phase I and II IDOT compliance projects. When asked I take part in geophysical surveys that require me to operate a magnetometer, in which I have become quite proficient in using. I participate in Phase III site mitigation studies, which requires excavating and recording subsurface features, as well as describing and creating scaled drawings of the associated soil profiles. Some of the larger or more significant site excavations I have worked on are listed below. Another responsibility of mine is to conduct mound revisits for previous or ongoing IDOT projects. This includes landowner contacts for permission, pedestrian survey, and mound recordation. I also participate in completing lab work, such as washing and labeling artifacts, curation of collections and records, basic artifact inventory, and generalized research for various ongoing projects.
