As part of the Wetland Science Program, I conduct vegetation surveys and map wetland communities throughout Illinois. I conduct monitoring of wetland mitigation sites for the Illinois Department of Transportation. I have given presentations and assisted workshops on Illinois wetlands and wetland vegetation for various audiences.
I also conduct vegetation surveys in a variety of other Midwest habitats, for floristic quality comparisons as well as ecological studies. Recent and ongoing research has included success of various tree planting methods in a floodplain wetland restoration, vegetative and insect response to summer burning, plant colonization of bare ground (e.g., exposed dolomite, bison wallows, eroded glacial drift hills), and reproductive ecology of milkworts (Polygalaceae) in Illinois.
