Research Biography

Research Interests

  • Use of magnetic fly ash in identifying post-European settlement alluvium thickness and its record of atmospheric pollution
  • Stratigraphy and paleoenvironment of Illinois Episode (MIS 6) and pre-Illinois Episode (MIS 12-20) sediments and paleosols in SW Illinois
  • Fossil Quaternary gastropod records (loess, lacustrine) for paleoclimate and paleoecological interpretations
  • Provenance of loess and lake sediment records (mineralogy, magnetic properties, elemental composition)
  • Utilization of magnetic susceptibility for delineation of hydric (wetland) soils and as a soil drainage proxy for use in ecological restoration
  • Geomorphology and history of Illinois Episode glaciation in Illinois

Current Projects

  • Chronology, paleoclimate-paleoecology (gastropod assemblages, isotopes) and mechanisms of loess deposition in the Central Lowlands, USA
  • Surficial geologic mapping (and bedrock surface topography) in the Kaskaskia River Basin in southwestern Illinois, USA
  • Correlation of soil magnetic susceptibility to distribution of native tree and prairie species; utilization in restoration
  • Comparision of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment among Wisconsin, Illinois and pre-Illinois Episode glaciations in southwestern Illinois based on fossil assemblages, mineral and magnetic methods
